Graffiti by a female artist in Ottawa

Last day :(

I had a really amazing time this week and I am going to miss everyone I met, but I am glad I came. I didn't want to come at first because I am kind of nervous when I meet new people and I didn't know if this class would be fun. I quickly found out it is tons of fun and the people here are extremely nice and friendly. Hope  everyone has a great rest of the year and an awesome summer!  (and life if I never see you again) I hope to see you all again! :)

day of Pink: Firework

Katy Perry: Firework is a great song for positive messages about being yourself and not letting other people tell you who to be. My school did a flashmob to this song on the Day of Pink and we all thought it had a great message.

Flash mob:

free the children!!!!!!!!

free the children i believe is a great non profit organisation. It's all about children helping children, and it all started when a boy named Craig Kielburger, who started getting involved when he was 12 years old and heard a story in the media. They have tons of events to help people get involved, and i really feel like it's a genuine organisation whose really passionate about what they do.
Go to their website to learn more about the organisation and get involved.

Change

Taylor Swift has been an incredible role model ever since her first song. She is one of the very few girls in fame that has not been affected bymedia. She doesnt feel the need to show off every inch of her body, dance derogatorily on men, sing about sex, drugs or anything like that and she is still a world wide sensation! It goes to show that to be a strong, beautiful, independent woman, you only need to be yourself.

A great song by her that promotes what w ahve been talking about in class, is her song Change from the album Fearless. It talks about having hope and that change for the better will happen.

beautiful?

People call this beauty? You can count everyone of her ribs...Women and girls aspire to look like this, why? This isn't beauty to me...this is a sickness! Girls especially models barely eat anything (become anorexic) to reach this goal of perfection, but by the time they reach it they are so ill that it doesn't matter their size. Is this really the message we want to be giving to todays youth? I think not. People should be healthy, not starve themselves to attempt to reach the immpossible "perfect!"

Fireworks - Katy Perry

Fireworks is a well-known song that was released on October 26,2010 and also was written by Katy Perry.  Presented in 2011 on Aust Loggies and turned out to be a very successful song. Reaching the top spot on the billboard hot 100 and the top 5 on twenty charts around the world.

"Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting throught the wind Wanting to start again"

This is the first line of the song, in my opinion this means "Do you ever feel like your life is just passing by and your floating through a life you don’t want and wanting to start over."

Despit what people might think or say, you are unique and perfect in your own way. So don't be afraid to express yourself, cause you only  need to empress yourself.

Bascially what this song is about, you go ahead and shine your whole life is in front of you. Just because society may see you as "Different" don't let that stop you from just being yourself.

For example, in the music video when they are inviting the girl to get into the pool but she's upset with her body and then afterall she " Let's her colours show."

Keep this in mind. don't let other peoples comment or looks bring you down because after all
BABY, YOUR A FIREWORK.

REVIVE YOUR INNER CHILD 2

people these days (i mean youth) are usually too busy with dating and everything, that we are just lacking fun and the feeling of being a kid. The end

REVIVE YOUR INNER CHILD

not enough?

Off That!

This song is similar to what we talked about and you see that in the first couple of lines and many lines throughout the song.  For example,

"Welcome to the future!"

This line immediately tells you that you're being introduced to a new world which is obiously the future in this context.  So pretty much you're going to see something new.

That was just the introduction but the first three words of verse one tell you immediately what the singer or rapper is going to be telling us about.  Those words are:

"I'm so tomorrow..."

Those three words tell you that everything about the artist is the future because tomorrow is the future.  Now mixing those seven words, Welcome to the future and I'm so tomorrow immediately inform you that this guy is going to brag about how cool he is because he knows or wears 2012 trends in 2011.  Which is just an example.

After hearing those lines you might think that those are just seven words, you can't judge a song by seven words but then you listen to the chorus:

"Whatever you about to discover We off that
You about to tell her you love it, we off that
Always want to fight in the club and we off that
But you can't bring the future back
Ya'll steady chasing the fame, we off that
Oversize clothes and the chains, we off that
Niggas still makin' it rain and we off that
But you can't bring the future back!"

The chorus usually sums up the whole song and in this case it does. For example, he pretty much says everything you can do or wear and then he says that him and his group are off that.  So he's saying he lives in the future and everyone else lives in the past.
This is the song "drop the world" by li'l wayne ft. eminem. It is basically a rap about being above the world, saying that they're better than everyone and they could "drop the world" whenever they wanted. This is masculinity at its best, they're strong, independent, respected and most important tough( not to mention the songs full of penis innuendo nad homophobic slurs ). but in reality they could just be hiding behind these tough lyrics. Li'l wayne might just look like this on weekends:

but its all about image on the outside

Music Video

No tough guys, no guns, no sexy girls, no lingere, no talk of sex or drugs or booze, it's just a nice song.
There's a lot of popular music out in youth culture today. From hiphop to pop, techno to rap, it's everywhere. But many of those songs really have different meanings hidden just under the lyrics. Much of it depicts how men and women in today's society should act. Males should be tough and independant, while women should be more submissive, more of an object. These descriptions really arn't hard to come by, but there are songs that go against that, like Lupe Fiasco's The Show Goes On. I believe this song goes against what is usually thought to be in rap songs, and that it's kind of like an inspiration. This section "So no matter what been through, no matter what you into
No matter what you see when you look outside your window
Brown grass or green grass, picket fence or barbed wire
Never ever put them down, you just lift your arms higher
Raise 'em 'til your arms tired, let 'em know you here
That you struggling, survivin', that you gon' persevere
Ain't nobody leavin', nobody goin' home
Even if they turn the lights out, the show is goin' on
" is really inspirational. It's saying that, no matter where you are, or who you are, you can perservere. You can do it, even if "they turn the lights out" or take away your hope. Go'n and put your hands up, when times is hard, you stand up  this line is basically saying what Lupe is doing. He's standing up against what the stereotypical rap songs are about, and that you should too. I'm glad that someone is going against it, and he's not the only one.

The show goes on, and this time it's the right way.

When most people listen to this video they think 'yo, lil wayne is awesome' or 'i love this song' and some of the people who like this video are gilrs! Take a look at the lyrics and it'll change your percpective of this, Girls, do you like feeling beneath him or any other guy? Well, this is exactly what this song promotes! Through out this whole song, did you ever hear the girl or should or girls express thow they feel? Lil' wayne was also trynna bumb himself up by bring up the size of his wallet. Does these lyrics change your mind about this song??

Ow... Uh huh Young Mula Baby

Teenage Dream

                                      Katy Perry-music video-Teenage Dream

The video I found that portrays this subject perfectly is "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry. In this video there is a male who is strong, tuff, etc... and you see him preparing for a boxing match maybe, or just plain working on his muscels. Then you switch over a cool car with no top, (considered a "cool car" i'm guessing) where Katy Perry is hanging onto him and kissing him, ect...  so this is saying that to get a girl you have to be strong and masculin. This also says that girls have to be sexual and submissive and where inappropriate clothing to "get the guy", because in the video the male is responding to her actions of affection. Later on in the video they start making out and showing innapropriate sceens, and it seems they are doing this becuaes the male is strong and the female is sexuale. Something else wrong with these characters (or actors) is that the male Katy Perry is all over doesn't look like any young teenager i know. He has a full beard and looks at least 20.

One line in the song is "...so i let my walls come down..." and this line caught my attention because it's saying, "yes i was being carefull but i dont care anymore lets do this!" and seeing has in the song there teenagers i think they are premoting the wrong idea to teens. It's like telling them it's ok, when in reality you shouldn't be doing that kind of stuff untill after your married.

Another line is"....things we're kinda heavy you brought me to life, now every febuary you'll be my valentine.." I believe this line is implying that she was wider, but as soon as she met this guy, she went on a diet and because she got skinny, she got the guy. I believe this is implying the wrong message, being wider isn't a bad thing, and going on a diet especially at a young age can be wrong and unhealthy.

All Time Low- Challenging The Norm

The video that I have chosen for this assignment is Weightless by All Time Low.

This music video isn't showing that everyone has to be a certain way. I am not focusing on the song and the lyrics as much as the choreography itself. Different characters in the video show different stereotypes like the band groupie girls at the beginning, falling all over the lead singer.

These girls are portrayed as 'band sluts' and people who will do anythign just to be near you. But you wonder why they would want to be near him. I mean he is no hulk, but the girls are still attracted to him? This is because (my best guess) he has been shown as famous because he is in a successful band. This is showing that not everyone has to be beautiful to be confident and like who they are.

Another character would be "embarrassing tattoo's guy". He tries to seem cool by showing people that he is daring by having marked his body forever.

These people could also fit into different catagories that we were talking about earlier in the week. like the band mates would be catagorized as 'Emo'. So they are being judged by a way they like to dress? NO! the point of this video is that everyone is judged by first impressions and what they seem.

But isnt that the whole point of this assignment? To look for a video that shows the stereotypical way that males and females are viewed? Well this is an example of how everyone is judged by looks but thats not only what matters.

This music video features Richard Vission, and Static Revenger ...and when they are shown(in the music video), they are both standing in a completely black outfit, showing no emotion, just bobbing their heads back and forth. they both look very intimidating.

Richard Vission:    Static Revenger:

Luciana also says..: "i like that Gucci, Gucci" "i like that dollar bill"
obviously she likes men with money and power.
in another verse Luciana says "i love the money money" "im drippin drippin gold"which proves again, that what she wants is ..MONEY.

Born This Way?

Lady Gaga is a world-wide sensation. In almost all if not all of her songs she is seen dancing, slirting, kissing boys. They are always the same: Tall, extremely muscular, tough, usually in clothing that shows their bare torso's. It is showing that to be with a beautiful, rich girl you must fit that description, when in reality very few teenage or young adult boys look like that! Not to mention all of her songs are about sex or imply sex, which sets a bad example for young teens who look up to her. Also, her lack of clothing, fuels the sterotype for girls as well. They will feel that to be popular or rich or famous, they need to show off their bodies in incredibly scandalous ways.

I'm not going to lie, I am a Gaga fan. I love the beats of her music and the catchy lyrics, but when you start to pick apart even your favoutrite songs and videos, you can find some scary facts you never realized.

"Candy Shop" by 50 Cent

This video represents a guy who goes into a house full of girls and in the video the girls are portrayed like objects throughout the video and the song is talking about him going into the house and there's all these women that don't do anything smart. They just dance around the singer. It is definately not a good example of what girls should be.
This is the chorus:
I take you to the candy shop
I'll let ya lick the lollypop
Go 'head girl, don't you stop
Keep going 'til you hit the spot (whoa)
I found that the chorus is an innuendo because they say "lick the lollipop" but they're obviously not talking about an actual lollipop.

alex lacasse, reinforcing the ideas we already have

The song "like this like that" by alex lacasse from ottawa relates a lot of the topics that we talked about today. It objectifies women quite a bit and involves the hyper masculinity. In the video alex keeps on popping his collar, which makes him seem like he's trying to be really cool and seem all tough. Just in verse 1 he has that assertive style over women, looking only at her body, not even her face, he refers to her miniskirt and how he's looking at her legs."Oh girl you looking fine tonight, Tight style, Oh! shorty's looking just right! You got a smile that says (baby here's my number) you can dial. And you wearing the miniskirt, (nobody can) and i know you want to be (number one fan) I see you singing the songs, looking fly out there, and baby your making me stare!" In the video when he looks down at her legs it seems like he feels like he has a right to look at her whenecver and wherever he wants, which sort of has an aggression towards women in it. Like he's the one in control of the relationship and can do whatever he wants to her. "It drives me insane and girl when we touch like this, (like this) like that (like that)" Girl i can give you more than you can imagine, bring it to my world, and girl lets make it happen, you and i, up all night, baby you know i'd do you right" In these lines he really just seems to be some sex crazed man trying to seduce her. How she's weak and fragile and is just going to let that happen, adding to the idea of what feminity should be.
I used to really like alex lacasse, but now i'm not so sure because he seems to just be conforming to society and reinforcing the notions we already have about masculinity and feminity, when it's not really like that.

What messages are in the songs we listen to?

A song that I really like is called Who Says by Selena Gomez. This is the link to the video: http://www.YouTube.com/watch?v=sVPZJG2pyHs

Some of the Lyrics in this song are this:
"You made me insecure
Told me I wasn't good enough
But who are you to judge
When you're a diamond in the rough
I'm sure you got some things
You'd like to change about yourself
But when it comes to me
I wouldn't want to be anybody else"

"Who says
Who says you're not star potential
Who says you're not presidential
Who says you can't be in movies
Listen to me, listen to me
Who says you don't pass the test
Who says you can't be the best
Who said, who said
Won't you tell me who said that"

These are only 2 verses about how girls should only be themselves, they shouldn't listen to what the media says about how girls should look or act.  The song also says that they could be anything or anybody that they want to be, which is very true as long as they set their mind to it.
Personally my favourite lyrics from the song are "I'm no beauty queen... I'm just beautiful me" I like those lyrics because it is another way of saying that you should only be yourself. I am also glad that this song is directed to girls because I  find that the media is always telling girls how to be and that they have to be skinny or have perfect bodies etc. and this song shows that this is not true and that they don't have to have or be those things. Girls should be individual and be themselves!

Selena Gomez and the scene "Who Says"

Situations-Escape the Fate

Just the lyrics makes this song very ...hmm.. im not sure what to call it, but it seems like the men are sexually uhhhh... uhhh... the women. I am not good at blogging so my apologies. :( I never blogged before either.

Escape the Fate - Situations

Situations are irrelevant now.
She loves the way that I tease,
I love the way that she breathes

I touched her ooh, she touched my ahhh, it was the craziest thing.
I love the girls who hate to love because they're just like me.
A certain girl she took my hand and ran it up her thigh.
She licked her lips and pulled my hair, I fall in love for a night

She can't behave and I'm just a slave,
don’t worry I'll be gone when the morning comes.

Darling what is going on?
Honestly that never happened
Lying is your favorite passion.
Leave me, go where you belong
Higher heels and lipstick napkins
dying is your latest fashion.

The frustration it's a regular thing
I hate the ones who love to hate because they're just like me.
A certain girl she took her hand and put it in my lap
"It's way too full," she said
"Once you have me you'll always come back."

She can't behave and I'm just a slave,
don’t worry I'll be gone when the morning comes.

Darling what is going on?
Honestly that never happened
Lying is your favorite passion.
Leave me, go where you belong
Higher heels and lipstick napkins
dying is your latest fashion.

I know you love to resist
and all it takes is a kiss
and you just love to hate me.

You know you love all the lies
so don’t act surprised
that I just love to hate you.

I kissed your lips you pulled my hair it was the craziest thing.
I love the girls who love to hate. [Breathing]

(Whoa) Darling what is going on?
Honestly that never happened
Lying is your favorite passion.
Leave me, go where you belong
Higher heels and lipstick napkins,
dying is your latest fashion

Darling (leave me) what is going on?
Honestly that never happened
Lying is your favorite passion
Leave me (darling) go where you belong
Higher heels and lipstick napkins,
dying is your favorite passion

Who is using the technology?

The media portrays all of these teens the way they think they act. All of media says that teens are always on the internet, texting, on the phone or listening to music. They say teens do all of this but have they ever looked at what adults do?

Most adults who work in an office are on the computer all day long, they use the phone to communicate with other people from work, other family members or friends. Adults also text, I see tons of people on their cellphones all the time. Most adults have an e-mail account as well and possibly a facebook account. Music may not be as popular with the adults as it is with the youth age group but they do still listen to it, it may not be the same type of music that the youth listens to or they may not have any sort of i pod but they still listen to music in some sort of way.

The youth age group however, mostly go to school from Monday till Friday and are not aloud to use their cell phones and most likely have only an hour on the computer at school other then that they only have the time between when they get home and when they go to sleep and on the weekends. Media makes the youth age group seem like they spend all of their time on the computer or texting, they may have only a limited time on the phone or on the computer unlike adults who use technology way more then us.

I think that the media should look at other age groups and see how much they do the things we do. What do you think?
 Should they compare this:

Cell phones! Pros and Cons! Are they dangerous?

Today
Before I was exposed to information about these pocket sized telephones I thought that cell phones were just a way to have a telephone that isn't at your house with a couple cool additions. After learning information about the topic I was wrong!  Cell phones have much more to them than the eye can see.  For example, those "cool additions" are used way too much and have become the basic way to communicate for the last couple years which is not right.  People have started to talk through texting which means in the present people are tapping little letters on a tiny keyboard than actually communicating verbally and moving their mouth.   This is very different than what they did a couple decades ago.  The people in the 1970's would actually talk, face to face. When they invented the first couple cell phones they were huge, if you had one of those cell phones it would mean that you made it big time, it was a statement that told everyone that you were better than them and if you didn't have it you were nothing... Oh ya it looked liked this:

 Yesterday
Just look at it, cell phones today are less than a tenth of that.  You could make the arguement that technology has grown and we know more now.  I agree with that but yet still we take it for granted and want more.  Just take a minute and look at the two pictures and you'll know the difference.
Now, you might be thinking that it doesn't matter if we use it a lot, it's ours and we can use it anyway we like.  I can't stop those people but you can inform them that it won't help their future.  When you go to a job interview are you going to be infront of the boss texting? Of course not!  You're going to have to be face to face and tell him/her why they should give you the job.  Now when you text all the time you're not going to have experience verbally communicating to the degree to get a job so you'll get declined and start serving happy meals for the rest of your life.  Last but not least after all the texting you will be afraid to meet new people because you won't be able to talk to them and you definately don't have everyone in the world as a contact.  I'm not telling you not to use cell phones but give yourself a limit of texting and you can't cross it unless you absolutely have to in case of emergency.  I say that because a cell phone can be handy but we have to realise that smily and sad faces won't make you a communicator.  For all I know the person I'm textingcan be having a bad day but I can't do anything about it because on their cellular it will show something different.  So next time you're in texting situation just think about what you should do.

Purpose Of Cell Phones

                                                              Cells Phones
Cells phones have obviously changed our lifes.Cells phones are used to help us interact with our friends, family, and also when your in danger. They allow for constant connectivity to an office or home without being tied down to a wired connection.  Every time a person takes an out of  trip, or goes to a different place, he or she would have to call family or coworkers for help or what ever the reason might be. Our technology has developed from history and also we are able to use the internet as a resource. If you really think about cells phones, they are really helpful  to us. As you can see our generations of cells have improved throughout the years.

Teen Culture? More like stero-typing.

According to the media, teens are constantly texting. We're the "Me generation". Ask yourself this, do you know one teen who isn't completely obsessed with texting? One teen who is compastionate and thinks about the enviornment and other people? Well is certanly do! Infact i am one of those teens, yes, i text occasionly but it isn't to the point where i'm obsessed! So why doesn't the media show and talk about those teens who are intrested in things other than the "typical" teen? Instead of being cooped up inside texing, watching television, and playing video games i am constantly outside! I play basketball, hang out with my friends, and even read!

Ipods

The ipod is a way for us to listen to an almost endless amount of music over and over again. If you its on itunes then it's yours for only $0.99. What could possibly be wrong with an invention like this? A lot...... technology is a paradox so for everything that is good about ipods (like portability) there is always some thing bad (like addiction)

Sure, ipods are easy for getting music really cheap that you can then carry around forever....

Have you ever wondered what happends to the artists when they sell you that music really cheap or even when you illegally download music. They lose their jobs which ends up looking something like this:

(Eminem after you stole his music)

So remember ipods can be awesome when used right!
